Mommy says: Longhorn Park in Cedar Hill (425 E Parkerville Rd) is a small park with plenty of room for adventure! There is a playground structure, a covered pavilion, an exercise course along 1/2 mile paved trail, and a nicely treed area, great for exploring. There is a water fountain at the park, but no restroom.

Phillips Community Park in Frisco (3335 4th Army Memorial) has 2 playgrounds (North & Central), 3 restrooms, baseball, softball, & soccer fields, and there is currently construction in progress on the dog park. (The park's master plan is here.) There are also working water fountains and a picnic pavilion.

(If you don't know who the Bobbsey Twins are, I suppose I am aging myself.)

A place for the smaller kids.

Basketball.

Great place for a picnic.

Plenty of room to kick a ball, fly a kite, or play a game of tag.

J.R. Newman Park in Frisco (8211 Twin Falls Dr) is a great place to cool off in the summer, or climb around any other time of the year. The playground, splash park, basketball court, & pavilion are all enclosed in a fenced area. There are large fields to play in just outside the fenced area. There is a working water fountain, but no restroom.

I went on an adventure across this bridge!

Mommy says: Getzendaner Park in Waxahachie (400 S Grand Ave) is a 33 acre, very well shaded, park full of things to do. There are 3 different playgrounds, a maze, lots of open grassy areas, picnic tables, and a creek. One of the 3 playgrounds is a barrier-free playground (next to the maze, which would also accommodate a wheelchair), but it appears to be a combo exercise course/barrier-free playground. Chautaugua Auditorium, built in 1902!, is housed at the park. The park serves as the entry point to Waxahachie's nearly 8 mile trail system. There are plenty of restrooms around the park & it is well off the beaten path, so there are no worries about traffic. It is also right by the town's hospital, which is comforting to the parents of dare devils. While this park is more than worth the visit if you enjoy the outdoors, at the time of our visit (June 2011) the playgrounds are in some disrepair, so it is not the ideal park if you are just looking for play structures.

The Preserve at McCormick Park in Euless (2005 Fuller-Wise Rd) is a 27 acre park with a bike/hike trail, a playground, picnic areas, 2 ponds, a fishing pier, & boardwalk. The trail connects the park to the Villages of Bear Creek & McCormick Park.

McCormick Park in Euless (2190 Joyce Ct) is a 12 acre park that includes a 1/3 mile bike/hike trail, a nice [reservable] gazebo, picnic area, & playground. The trail connects the park to The Preserve at McCormick Park & Bob Eden Park.

Mommy says: The Ark located in First Baptist Coppell (590 S Denton Tap Rd in Coppell) is a great indoor play area for kids of all ages. Open hours vary, depending on the time of year (there is less open play time during the school year, when the church has a preschool program), but entrance is free. You can also host a birthday party at The Ark, for a small fee. The summer, hours are 9am-5pm Mon-Thurs & 9am-12pm Fri. I believe the hours during the school year are 9am-5pm Mon, 9am-10:30am & 2pm-5pm Tues & Thurs, 2pm-5pm Wed, & 9am-12pm on Fri. Please check the calendar on their website to verify hours before heading out. Besides the play structures, we spotted board games a plenty, and there are definitely plenty of tables available to stop & have lunch or a snack. There is a restroom right outside The Ark, and there is also a small outdoor playground that is available to play on.

Mommy says: Newby Park in Ft Worth (1105 Jerome St) is a cute little neighborhood park, with a playground, swings, a baseball field, basketball court, a covered pavilion, & plenty of space to run around. There are no restrooms on site on super close (that we noticed at least).

Mommy says: Tillery Park in Ft Worth (2200 Rockridge Terrace) is a great find! Built by the hands & financial contributions (matched by the city) of the neighborhood it's in, this is truly a neighborhood park! There are 2 playground areas, the 1st is a new (Oct 2007) wooden structure with plenty of slides, things to climb, and lots of places for imaginative play. There is a separate toddler play area in this structure & there are swings for bigger kids. The 2nd is the older play area, with a smaller play structure, slide, merry-go-round, see-saw, & baby swings. There are several benches in both areas, including covered benches for some shade. There are 2 separate grassy areas, great for picnics of free play, and there are trails the lead off into the "woods" (supervision strongly encouraged if you allow your child to explore these areas). There is no restroom or water fountain on site.

Finch Park in McKinney (301 W. Standifer St) is one of the oldest parks in McKinney. It's a 32 acre park with a playground, splash pad, tennis courts, sand volleyball court, basketball court, and 2 reservable pavilions. There are restrooms at this park (always nice!). It looks like there are plenty of great trees to lay a blanket under & have a nice picnic too.

Mommy says: Terry Park in Heath (at the end of Terry Lane) is a hidden gem for water lovers. It hosts a boat ramps & docks, a covered pavilion, a small playground, swings, a walking trail, open grassy areas, and plenty of great fishing (or splashing) spots. There is a restroom & water fountain at the park also. There is easy access to the water & the water leves are currently low enough that the drop-off into the water is a bit scary. This is probably not the park to visit if you don't want to chase an overly-active toddler (or dare-devil older kid) around.

Harrington Park in Plano (401 W 16th St) has a sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits, a 1.45 mile hike (that leads to many local restaurants) & bike trail, playground, soccer goals, picnic tables, grills, and a covered pavilion. Right across the street you'll find a baseball field. The restrooms were locked & the water fountain was turned off, but that could be a seasonal thing.

The play area also has 2 gorilla statues & 2 alligators to climb on. There is no restroom at this park, so come prepared.

SECTION 1: This one is really for the little kids.

It does have a lot of slide, but I'm just too big to play on this one now... I'm a BIG BOY.

SECTION 2: See the swings? and, see those twisty climby things?

SECTION 3: I like all this stuff the best.

Slides, a rock wall, a maze to trace, a car race, stuff to climb... I really like this one!

I like climbing rocks too. Yeah, they're fun.

Mommy says: Audubon Park in Garland (342 Oats Rd) has something for everyone to enjoy. Plenty of picnic tables, a fun playground - split into 3 sections somewhat by age, a disc golf course, 3.1 mile running/biking/walking trail (connects to Duck Creek Greenbelt trail), Audubon Recreation Center, and it's located right behind Surf and Swim (check link for current admission price & dates/hours of operation). The playground is especially great for kids who like to climb thing, as there are several different skill-level appropriate climbing structures. There is a restroom near the playground, however it was locked up when we visited. We had to take about a 1 mile run to down the trail to find a port-a-potty (although the rec center surely has a restroom available & it is right by the playground).

Mommy says: Clarence Thompson Park in Arlington (1600 Brown Blvd) is a well shaded 15 acre park, with lots of unique play structures, swings, a merry-go-round, a baseball field, picnic tables, and a wooded nature area. The Boy quickly declared this park the coolest park, and getting him to leave wasn't easy. There isn't a restroom or water fountain at the park, but there are plenty of places a short drive away.

Mommy says: Brown-Singleton Park in Waxahachie (Farley St & Elmwood) is a 30 acre park, with a nice playground, a covered pavilion, soccer fields, a baseball field, a basketball goal (it's in the parking lot though, so you wouldn't be able to play a very rowdy game if the lot was full) and lots of space to run around. There is a port-a-potty, but no water fountain. The park is right on a fairly busy road, but there are some trees blocking the road from the playground.

Mommy says: Jewel Park in Rockwall (7123 Hunt Lane) is a great treat for the kids the love sand! There is a HUGE sandbox, with a sand/water table, a play structure, swings, a climbing structure, a covered picnic area, and a little open space with soccer goals. If it has rained recently, be sure to pack some towels & extra clothes because the mud pit - ie sandbox - is a kid magnet! There is a water fountain at the park, but it was not turned on when we visited. The sand/water table was also turned off. There is no restroom.

Mommy says: Arnold & Carol Ablon Park in Garland (3850 Ablon Trail Drive) is a slightly hidden park with two great play structures - one for younger kids & one for the "big" kids. There are also two separate swing structures - one for babies/toddlers & one for "big" kids. There is a nice fishing pond, plenty of open area to run, fly a kite, or play ball, a grass baseball/softball field, a .9 mil track, & a reservable covered pavilion. There was a water fountain & a surprisingly clean port-a-potty. The Boy enjoyed this park, especially the 3 slides joined together.

Mommy says: Gene Schrickel Jr Park, In Arlington (4500 Park Springs Blvd) is a great place for climbing, spinning, running, fishing, and just about anything else you can imagine. The unique playground structures leave endless possibilities for the creative climber. The park is right next to a busy road, so keep an eye on runners, and there is no restroom (although there is a gas station right across the street), but there is a water fountain. There is a paved trail through the park, several picnic tables, a covered pavilion you can rent, and a fishing pond.

Mommy says: Senter Park in Irving, TX (901 S. Senter St) is a nice park for walking a trail, playing some volleyball, or having a picnic. There was plenty of sand to keep any sand-love happy, but it would stress out any neat-freak moms. ;) There is a stream running through the park & although it's fenced off, it was be easy for a toddler to run under the fencing. There was a sign up that said "no soccer" which was a little strange, so keep that in mind if your child likes to take a ball to the park. The was no restroom outside (there was a port-a-potty though), but I'm sure there was a restroom inside the rec center. There was also a water fountain, but it looked a bit questionable to me.

Mommy says: Murphy City Park in Murphy (324 Pine Top Dr) is somewhat hidden in a neighborhood (although I'm sure the locals know where it is). It has baseball & soccer fields, a basketball court (with a hopscotch court), a covered pavilion, swings, slides, & plenty to climb on. It doesn't have a restroom, which was a bad thing for us, ;) but there are plenty of stores/restaurants nearby to run to if you need them.

Mommy says: Meadowcreek at Madison in Rockwall (1420 Madison Dr) is a small neighborhood park. There are 2 play structures & there is a short walking trail. There is no restroom or water fountain, so this spot is really best for killing a little time if you live or need to shop nearby. There are benches to sit on, and a little open area to fly a kite or kick a ball.

Mommy says: Red Bird Park in Duncanville (300 W Red Bird Ln) is to be a somewhat-hidden gem. The park is almost 17.5 acres large, with a .56 mile walking trail, a pavilion that can be reserved, several picnic tables, plenty of open are to play ball or run around, & a playground that includes a structure for big kids & a structure for small kids, swings, & plenty to climb on. There is also a water fountain (though be careful, The Boy discovered it could create a mini splash park if he was so inclined... and he was), but no restroom. We were told that there are usually horses out in a field that back up to the rear of the park, but they weren't out during our visit.

Mommy says: Paradise Pond at First Baptist Church Grapevine (301 E Texas Street in Grapevine) is an indoor play place for children 2 years - 6th grade & includes 10 different play stations. There's a grocery store, basketball toss, Legos, trains, cars, magnets, dress up, a small climbing wall, an over-sized bounce house, & a two-story play feature with a slide. Open play times are Thursdays & Fridays from 9am-11am ($1 per person, cash only, including parents). Children (and adults) must wear socks to play. You can also reserve the space for a private party.

Mommy says: Northshore Park in Rockwall (609 Highland Dr) is a the top of the cool parks list for sure! Of course we wish it were bigger, but you can't have it all. With a small, yet really cool playground, a basketball court, hopscotch & four square boards, a wiffle ball field (with the balls & bats!), swings, 1 picnic table, and the very cool Neos 360 (for video of it in action, see our Facebook page)! This park doesn't have a restroom, but it does have a water fountain. The park is right next to a school, so you might want to avoid it during drop off/pick up times.

There are several picnic tables & great grassy spots for a snack of lunch.

Mommy says: Andrew Brown Jr Community Park East/Kid Country in Coppell (260 E Parkway Blvd) has a covered pavilion, a pond full of ducks & turtles, with a fishing pier, lots of picnic tables, a nice trail around the pond, a basketball court, 4 softball fields, & a great wooden play structure. The play structure has only 1 way in/out, a large sandbox, several benches, tons of swings, and some picnic tables. While we were there, the restrooms were locked up & the water fountain wasn't working.

The Aquatic & Recreation Center is also located here. I can't locate information on the water park, so please check with the city to find out hours of operation & fees.

Mommy says: Bob Woodruff Park in Plano (2601 San Gabriel Dr) has 2 pavilions, a playground, a sand volleyball court, a pond with a fishing pier, plenty of grassy space to play a game of kick ball, or have a nice picnic, a hiking/biking trail, and a playground. There is a restroom & water fountains, but keep a watchful eye on young ones because the pond is very close to the playground.

Mommy says: Dutch Branch Park in Benbrook (Hwy 377 & Winscott) is full of things to do. 8 baseball/softball fields, a football/soccer field, 2 sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, a duck pond, pavilions (some can be reserved) & 2 unique playgrounds (the city's website says there are 3 playgrounds, I'm assuming the 3rd is around the baseball fields somewhere). This looks like the perfect park to spend a full day playing, picnicking, & relaxing.

Mommy says: Olde City Park in Wylie (112 S Ballard) is smaller park with a busy road running beside it (no fencing), but it has plenty to do. there's a pavilion you can rent, with plenty of tables, a restroom, a water fountain, horseshoe pits, swings, slides, a climbing thing with monkey bars, a play structure for toddlers, & a play structure for older kids. There is plenty of grass for a game of soccer or football, or flying a kite. There is a nice gazebo for a relaxing, shady spot to read, or play.

I got too tired riding bikes. ((Yes, I know, he should have a helmet. He had one, but when he proceeded to throw a huge fit & then take it off, we gave up. Trust me, you would've too.))

Mommy says: River Legacy Park in Arlington is our family's favorite park. The Boy's daddy proposed to The Boy's mommy here 9 years ago! This park is really geared towards outdoor lovers. If you are just looking for a playground this is not your park, especially in the summer, as the entire playground is made of metals & woods that are too hot to touch. However, if you like to run, bike, roller blade, walk your dog, or take a nature hike, this is your park!

River Legacy Parks (there's actually 2 parks & River Legacy East is a good playground-oriented park, but that is for another day) are built around the Trinity River & include 1,300 acres of nature: over 8 miles of paved trails, just over 2.5 miles of mountain bike trails, and miles of unpaved walking trails. There are plenty of open green areas to fly a kite or play soccer, there's a restroom & well placed port-a-potties, lots of picnic tables, a playground, a canoe launch, & covered pavilions available to rent. You can also check out the Living Science Center if you're at the park Tues - Sat from 9am - 5pm (with snake feedings at 4pm on Fridays!).

I have a boo-boo! **REMINDER: slides are very hot in the summer in Texas. Even with a blanket under him to slide down, The Boy managed to touch his arm to the side of the slide & he was burnt. (Nothing major, he'll live. ;) )**

Mommy says: Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie (5700 Lake Ridge Pkwy) is a great place to spend several hours, or a full day. The park is open from March - October, 6am - 10pm. There is an entrance fee of $10 per vehicle (additional fee if more than 6 people are in the vehicle), unless you are a Grand Prairie resident, then entry is free. We spent 2.5 hours there & it was worth the $10 for sure! There were only 2 other families there the whole time we were there. We had an entire playground & beach practically to ourselves! There are almost 100 picnic sites throughout the 784 acre park, including plenty by the swimming beach & playground (which are right by each other). There is a concession stand (near the playground/beach area), plenty of bathrooms (including showers!), a sand volleyball court, & pavilions available to rent.

Mommy says: Coffee Park in Dallas/University Park (3400 Northwest Pkwy) has a wonderful, barrier-free playground, lots of picnic tables, a huge green area to run in or play soccer, a baseball field, and plenty of nice spots under big old trees to just sit down & relax while the kids play.

Mommy says: Heights Park in Richardson, TX (Floyd & Arapaho) has a fairly new, really cool playground (although, it's not nearly as cool as it once was) & lots of other great amenities. There are 2 covered pavilions, lots of picnic tables tennis courts, baseball fields, a basketball goal, plenty of open green space, a pool, recreation center, and a splash park. There is a restroom, and a working water fountain, and plenty of benches. There is a creek running through the middle of the park and the hills near it are steep enough that you need to keep an eye on younger kids that are inclined to running.

Mommy says: Heritage Community Park in Glenn Heights, TX (400 E. Bear Creek Rd) has a little something for everyone. A basketball court, softball fields, soccer fields, a playground, swings, lots of open, grassy areas, a nice walking trail, & plenty of picnic tables. The covered pavilion can be rented for parties, but I can't find an online link. The park was a fair amount of trash thrown around the park, & there's no fencing from the fairly busy road that runs in front of it - but the playground is far enough away that it's not a huge concern. The bathrooms really needed to be cleaned, but they do work, as do the water fountains.

Mommy says: Lake Cliff Park in Dallas, TX/Oak Cliff (200 E Colorado Blvd) has an amazing history (read about it here). The structures & nature make for a scenic walk, a photographers perfect backdrop, or a peaceful picnic. The playground is unique & will entertain kids of any age with the 3 play structures (1 for toddlers, 1 for older kids, & 1 that's a huge rocket ship) & swings. There is a restroom, picnic tables, grills, a baseball field, basketball courts, a covered pavilion, and plenty of wide open green areas for soccer, kite flying, or playing tag. The few drawbacks are: that the park isn't as clean as most of the parks we have been to, although it's not disgusting (but please watch for broken glass near the water), there is no fencing around the sides that back up to busy roads (although the playground isn't near the busy streets), and there is plenty of water for a little one to fall into, so you do have to keep them close.

An adorable 3 year old, but he's not happy with the lack of bounce on this guy.

Covered picnic tables, baby swings, and the 2-seater ride-on. This backs up to a creek, with houses on the other side. There is also an uncovered picnic table nearby.

Swing, a bench for mom (or dad), & in the distance you can see the baseball field.
The structure for smaller kids. Our guest writer's 2 year olds loved this. There are also tennis courts to the left.

This is for the bigger kids (our guest writer's 3 & 5 year old enjoyed this one). It is separated from the smaller structure by the swings.

Mimosa Park in Richardson (Mimosa & Apache) has a light baseball field, two tennis courts, a multi-purpose athletic field, picnic tables, play structures, and a restroom.

Old school monkey bars offer a fun challenge.
Ride on toys, total of 6 (This set of ride on toys is more fun when filled. There are 3 single ride ons too.)

This playscape is a good challenge for young toddlers through about 6 years old. There are 4-5 small slides and 1 big twirly slide.

This is our favorite spot.

Playing under the trees is our favorite thing about this park. It's also the perfect place to pretend to be a wolf. Talkie speaker set is very low for young children.

This is the structure for older kids. We weren't impressed by the playscape, but it is a good place to hook up with the older set of playmates, ages 6-9. There are also swings here, baby and big kid.

This was a real challenge.

If you have a young child that is obsessed with swinging, you MUST bring them here. This swing is low enough for a 2 year old to learn to swing unassisted.

Guest reviewer says: Austin Kent Ellis Park in Lewisville (810 South Orchard & Fox) is an older structure made awesome by lush fields and mature trees. The property is on a main street (Old Orchard) but the playscape is set way back from the road and buffers by the parking lot, which parks about 10 cars. You have a great morning making this park your destination. Hit the playground, make friends, and play hard. Spread a blanket under the trees and have some snacks. Bring a sketch pad and colored pencils and sketch the trees and animal life. Don't forget a ball to kick around or even some nuts in shell to bait the squirrels. In late fall, you can collect or play with horse apples. After an hour or two, you'll have to leave to find a bathroom!

Bi-Centennial Park

Mommy says: Bi-Centennial Park in Frisco (9349 Sunset Dr) is an older, smaller, less-crowded park, just down the street from Frisco Commons. There is a lot of open land, good for a game of tag or even soccer. There are bbq grills, a covered pavilion, an in-line hockey rink, a few swing, a see-saw, a rock climbing structure & a play structure. There are no restrooms or working water fountains (as of this post date), and there is an un-fenced creek to watch out for.

*Frisco's website says there are 2 sand volleyball courts & a spray park at this park. I did see the spray park, but I thought it was park of Frisco Commons (I assume this is also where the volleyball courts are). After Googling, I found this website, Matt's World, which says you should park at Frisco Commons if you are using the spray park. It also says they are adding restrooms, pavilions, & additional parking to Bi-Centennial Park in 2010. Perhaps we will need to re-visit this park at a later date.

Mommy says: Rawhide Park in Farmers Branch (13701 Rawhide Pkwy) is a very small park. Its main attraction is the walking/biking trail around the creek, but there is a small playground. There are also a few benches, a swing, ducks to feed, and plenty of open space to run free. There is no restroom, but it's right across the street from Oran Park which does have a restroom.

There are tennis courts, a basketball court, a playground, a place to play horseshoes, a creek (with ducks to feed!), picnic tables, a walking trail beside the creek, and a nature/flower garden. There's also a covered pavilion and restrooms.

Wet Zone is a cheap, fun place to spend a summer day (prices).

Mommy says: Celebration Park in Allen (701 Angel Parkway) blew me away! (Sorry for the lack of non-playground pics, there were teenagers everywhere & I didn't want to post pics of them for their privacy/security.) The play structure is huge & completely handicap accessible, there are also swings & a slide that are designed with handicapped children in mind. There's a spray park, covered pavilions, soccer fields, baseball fields, basketball courts, and a hiking/biking trail. There is a restroom on site (yay!).

Mommy says: Armstrong Park in Duncanville (315 E Wheatland Rd) has, as far as I know, the coolest wooden play structure in DFW. It is massive & so detailed. (The only down side is that, because it's so large, you have to stay right on top of small kids to know where they are.) There are lots of picnic tables & benches, plenty of trash cans, a restroom, a play structure, swings, baby swings, a covered pavilion that can be rented, a gazebo, an amphitheater, tennis courts, garden areas, lots of open areas to play, & a walking/bike trail. It's worth the drive (if you aren't near by) to spend a few hours enjoy all the park has to offer.

Mommy says: Oak Hills Park in Carrollton (1210 East Hebron) is a great park for wanna-be pirates! Recommended ages (per the posted sign) are 5-12, but it was plenty of fun for The Boy, he refused to leave. There's a covered pavilion, a couple of picnic tables that aren't covered, a sand volleyball court, 1/2 court basketball, swings, a play area, and a few large green areas, with benches for mom & dad to rest. There is a water fountain, but no restroom.

Town Center Park

Mommy says: Town Center Park in Sunnyvale has a playground (with separate play structures for toddlers & bigger kids), swings, a pond for fishing, picnic tables (covered & not covered), a covered pavilion, 2 tennis courts, a basketball court, large grassy area, water fountains, and a restroom. There's also some really cool trees, with benches, that are great for photos or a nice picnic.

Mommy says: Do you live in Castle Hills? If so, you have lots of awesome parks to choose from! Here are 2 of the ones we liked the most. There are no restrooms since they are neighborhood parks. There are benches, swings, trash cans, & playground equipment a-plenty though!

Mommy says: Lofland Park in Rockwall (407 Kernodle) is a favorite in our family. It's hidden & not well known (until today at least). However, there is no restroom. There are several pavilions that make great spots for picnics or parties. For play there is a slide, swings, merry-go-round, jungle gym, & a bouncy animal on one side, & a "train" to climb in/on, with a slide, steering wheels, & pole/ropes to climb up or down. There is also an open area big enough for a game of football, soccer, or tag.

Mommy says: Parr Park in Grapevine (3010 Parr Ln) has 3 play structures (2 are very toddler friendly), plenty of swings, a sand volleyball court, a basketball court, a football field, a soccer field, 2 baseball fields, hiking/biking trails, a gymnastics/balance bar area, a covered pavilion, lots of picnic tables & benches, water fountains, & a restroom. This park was truly impressive, we will definitely be going back & I highly recommend it - fun for the entire family!

Mommy says: The Park at Fox Chase in Rockwall (Tubbs & Summer Lee) has a playground (not that great for smaller kids), a splash park, a pond, picnic tables, a covered pavilion, a basketball court, an open grassy area, & a climbing boulder. There is no restroom at the park. The park is a great place for a picnic or a short nature walk, or to cool off in the water on a hot summer day.

Mommy says: The Tubes located in Irving Bible Church (2435 Kinwest Parkway in Irving) is open to the public 7 days a week from 8am - 10pm. (Closed the last Wednesday of the month from 8-10:30am for cleaning.) It is designed for kids in 5th grade or younger. The far side of the structure is for smaller kids, with no holes/nets for them to fall through. The whole structure is completely enclosed in ceiling to floor glass, with doors on 2 sides. There are 2 benches inside the area for you to sit & watch your child play, or you can sit just outside the area, in more comfortable couches. Food & drinks are not allowed inside the play area (neither are shoes), but there are tables just outside the area & a small cafe/coffee shop that is open Sun - Fri. There are nice, clean restrooms, free WiFi, and a small children's area between the Tubes & the restrooms, complete with a fish tank.
